Legal issues concerning drunk driving
Drunk driving (Drink driving in the UK and Australia) is the act of driving a motor vehicle (car, truck, etc.) while under the effects of alcohol. Drunk driving is illegal in most areas of the world. In some places, driving a motorless vehicle such as a bicycle while drunk is also illegal. Millions of people worldwide do it. Many say that there is no harm, usually responding to the accusations by responding in a manner like: ” I got home safely and no one was hurt”. Just because someone made it home safely to his or her bed does not mean that you’re making a right decision. When starting the engine and driving away after drinking you are not only putting your life at risk but you are risking the lives of all those you come across while driving. Every day, 28 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. This amounts to one death every 53 minutes. The annual cost of alcohol-related crashes totals more than $44 billion.
- Drinking and driving
Those charged with driving while intoxicated, are usually taken before the court and tried. The accused can call upon DUI lawyers (drunk driving lawyers) to help them in the case. DUI lawyers are criminal law attorneys who specialize in DUI law. They can be hired to defend or otherwise assist people who are arrested for driving under the influence charges, in understanding DUI laws and making informed decisions about how to plead in a DUI case. While it is imperative that the accused seek legal representation immediately following a drunk driving accident, it’s not always easy to find a top paralegal who will fight for his or her rights passionately and with the dedication that a particular case deserves.
What is needed is a skilled legal professional who knows the ins-and-outs of DUI law and who will make sure that the case is resolved with the best possible outcome. Since DUI laws are constantly changing, a criminal defense lawyer who practices DUI law also helps to protect the legal rights of an individual facing a DUI charge. Trying to overcome a DUI case without the legal counsel and expertise of an accredited lawyer is nothing short of impossible. Drunk driving attorneys have expert knowledge in the area of DUI infractions and can help both offenders and victims with their claims
In such cases, it is rather common to sometimes hear a person wondering what does OWI stand for. In order to clear the confusion, OWI stands for Operating While Intoxicated and it is for all intents and purposes synonymous with DUI (Driving Under Influence) although many law enforcement agencies refer to most drunk driving offenses as OWI. Also, in some jurisdictions, OWI is used in cases in which “driving” was not involved, but the operator was intoxicated while operating a boat, heavy equipment or carrying out some other function. For the most part, the acronym that indicates a drunk driving charge depends on the state in which you are driving. Depending on the terminology the state’s lawmakers used when creating their drunk driving laws, the charge could be referred to by the following acronyms:
DUI – driving under influence
OVI – operating a vehicle while intoxicated
OUI – operating under the influence while impaired
DWI – driving while intoxicated
OWI – operating while intoxicated
